Welcome to the BNC (BouNCe) Datapipe Information Page on IRCAdmin.net

What Is BNC?

BNC is used as a gateway to an IRC Server. There are quite a few advantages in using BNC besides being able to use a host other than the one assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). BNCs also protect you from various types of Denial-Of-Service (DOS) attacks such as IMCP, Winnuke and other exploits. Connecting to a BNC changes the IP that is visible to users on IRC to the IP of the computer or shell which from where it is running. The plus of BNC is that it still allows you to IRC as you normally would (DCC, Channels, Private Messages, etc), but prevents malicious individuals from attacking your computer.

There are a few disadvantages. The main one is that you are subject to the stablility and speed of the shell that hosts your BNC. If they are being attacked, are overloaded, are slow or are banned from IRC Servers for abuse, then you will have difficulty connecting and maintaining a connection to an IRC Server. A good rule of thumbs for Unix / Linux users is to see how a bot handles on the shell. If it is pretty stable and can get on IRC fairly easily, then you shouldn't have and problems using a BNC.

The other disadvantage is that the computer / shell that hosts your BNC will be subject to attacks, so make sure the owner will allow you to run a BNC before running it.

You can download the BNC software below. BNC must be compiled on Unix / Linux shells, but the Windows version is compiled and ready to use.

PLEASE NOTE: BNC and WinBNC are NO LONGER being developed. As such, do not expect any updates to be made to this page.

Windows NT/95/98/2000

NOTICE! Windows BNC is stopped by many Virus Scanners, listing it as a Proxy or Backdoor virus. This is because some viruses, trojans and hackers put BNC on an infected computer to allow them to use BNC's features. When used and configured properly, it should be secure and safe to use. If you feel uncomfortable installing or using BNC - then DON'T USE IT!!!
